President Biden did not comment on Friday about the ongoing disorder at the southern border after Title 42 expired. Title 42 was a policy implemented during the COVID pandemic by the Trump administration to discourage border crossings due to health concerns. Its expiration caused thousands of migrants to come to the US-Mexico border in hopes of gaining entry. During Biden's bilateral meeting with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez on Friday, reporters were allowed in the Oval Office, but White House staff removed them from the room as they shouted questions to the president. Biden remained silent for over a minute, offering a smirk and even a chuckle before the press were escorted out. The Biden administration is facing significant political pressure for its management of the U.S. border.
The absence of Title 42 has intensified the situation at the southern border. The Department of Health and Human Services has verified the death of a teenage migrant from Honduras while in the United States.
The White House press secretary, Karine Jean-Pierre, expressed her sadness over the death of a migrant teenager in US custody at the border. She stated that she had not yet spoken to President Biden about the incident and was unsure if he had been informed.
A policy allowing for the release of migrants without court dates was blocked by a federal judge just before Title 42 expired. The White House criticized the ruling as an act of sabotage. However, a spokesperson for the administration denied claims that CBP is encouraging mass release of migrants, stating that such claims are false. Additionally, the HHS chief claimed to be unaware of reports that the agency cannot contact 85,000 unaccompanied migrant children.
She stated that the ruling is detrimental and the Department of Justice will oppose it.
