John Daly has withdrawn from the 2023 PGA Championship at Oak Hill due to an injury, which is unknown. Stephan Jaeger from Germany will replace him. Daly has not been seen much on the PGA Tour in recent years. Tiger Woods is also not participating due to ankle surgery. Daly usually makes his comeback during major events like the PGA Championship. The announcement was made on social media.
Daly has the privilege of participating in the tournament indefinitely after winning it in 1991. Despite not making a cut since the 2019 Barracuda Championship in Reno, Nevada, he has competed in five non-major tournaments on the Tour in the last three years.
He came in 69th place, whereas Collin Morikawa emerged as the winner. Rickie Fowler is aware of the requirements to win his first major at the upcoming PGA Championship. Daly, who is 57 years old, has participated in the PGA Tour Champions, which is the senior division of the tour.
This season, he participated in five championships on the Tour and his highest ranking was tied-38th at The Galleri Classic in March. Daly is a popular figure among fans, not only because of his powerful tee shots that earned him the nickname "Long John," but also because of his charming personality that differs from the typical golfer.
The 1991 PGA Championship followed the usual pattern of Daly's career. At the age of 25, he participated in the event at Crooked Stick Golf Club in Indiana as the ninth alternate, as several players withdrew from the competition.
Although Daly was not expected to make a significant impact, he quickly proved otherwise by shooting three-under in his initial round and securing a tied-eighth position in the field, which altered people's perceptions.
He took the lead after scoring five-under in the second round and maintained his position until the end of Saturday and Sunday.
After scoring a 69 on Saturday, he had a total of 11-under. He finished his final round with a score of one-under and won the tournament with a total of 12-under, beating Bruce Lietzke by three strokes. This victory not only marked his first major win but also his first PGA Tour win, which made him famous.
In the future, he succeeded in winning the Open Championship in 1995 at the Old Course located in St.
Andrews in Scotland was where Daly won his second and last major tournament. Although Daly's recent scorecards may not be impressive enough for a major win, his relaxed demeanor and uniquely long backswing still attract a large fan base both in person and at home. He will surely be missed. However, there is hope that Daly may be able to bounce back in time for The Open at Royal Liverpool in July, as he has an exemption for his 1995 victory.
