Scarlett Johansson expressed feeling "hopeless" and uncertain about her future in acting after losing a role to Sandra Bullock.
Scarlett Johansson confessed that she started to doubt her career in the entertainment industry when she missed out on two significant acting opportunities that were given to Emily Blunt and Sandra Bullock.
According to Variety, the actress, who is 38 years old, shared that she felt discouraged when she was not chosen for roles in two popular movies: "Iron Man 2" in 2010 and "Gravity" in 2013, directed by Alfonso Cuarón. Johansson revealed this information during an interview with the publication.
She expressed her strong desire for that role and added that it was the final thing that caused her to feel overwhelmed.
I experienced a strong sense of despair and helplessness.
Scarlett Johansson made a joke about being a controversial figure in the past, saying "I made a career out of it." She also expressed disappointment with the roles she was being offered.
In 2010, Johansson's acting in "Lost in Translation" was highly praised and earned her a nomination for the best actress Golden Globe award, as well as a win for the best actress BAFTA award. However, this success also led to her being labeled as a "bombshell," which made it difficult for her to break free from that stereotype. Johansson expressed that it was a challenge to escape that categorization.
I worked on movies such as 'He's Just Not That Into You' and other films that followed a similar storyline.
She expressed her inability to make progress and stated that the job opportunities presented to her were unsatisfying.
I believe I was given the opportunity to act in every script that was written for Marilyn Monroe.
Blunt expressed her concern about reaching a creative dead end, but she had to withdraw from "Iron Man 2" because of a scheduling conflict with "Gulliver's Travels." Blunt had a prior agreement with Fox to appear in the poorly received fantasy adventure film featuring Jack Black. As a result, Johansson was selected to play the role of Natasha Romanov/Black Widow, a Russian spy turned Avenger, since Blunt was no longer in contention.
Despite being introduced in "Iron Man 2," Black Widow didn't receive a significant amount of screen time initially.
Johansson acknowledged that it provided an opportunity for further growth within the MCU realm.
She stated that the movie did not have the ability to advance her character's development, but there was a possibility for future films to showcase growth.
According to Variety, Johansson stated that her passion for acting was reignited by her roles in the movies "Under The Skin" and "Her" in 2013.
The star of "Lucy" remembered feeling a sudden realization that they still loved their job.
"It sparked a renewed enthusiasm within me for the job."
I experienced a decrease in my level of anxiety. Scarlett Johansson played the character of Black Widow in several movies within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including "The Avengers," "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," "Avengers: Age of Ultron," "Captain America: Civil War," "Avengers: Infinity War," "Captain Marvel," and "Avengers: Endgame." Despite her character's death in "Avengers: Endgame," Johansson returned for her own standalone prequel film, "Black Widow," in 2021. In 2019, Johansson was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in "Marriage Story" and for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of a single mother in Nazi-controlled Germany in "Jojo Rabbit." Although her role in the "Avengers" franchise brought her international fame, Johansson has stated that she is unlikely to appear in future films.
Johansson announced on Paltrow's "The goop Podcast" that she has completed a chapter in her life.
I had a sense of having completed all my tasks.
Playing the same character repeatedly for more than ten years is an exceptional and distinctive experience.
