It is reported that President Biden opted to attend his granddaughter's graduation instead of delivering a speech in honor of fallen police officers during National Police Week.
On Monday, as the week dedicated to honoring law enforcement officers began, Biden was scheduled to give a keynote speech at the National Peace Officers Memorial Service hosted by the National Fraternal Order of Police (FOP).
At the last moment, the president withdrew from the event even though his name had already been included in the program. Instead, Attorney General Merrick Garland was sent to represent Biden.
During National Police Week, Biden released a statement in which he promised not to defund the police, but instead focus on gun control. Blinken read the president's letter at the event.
On Monday, Biden chose to attend his granddaughter Maisy Biden's graduation ceremony at the University of Pennsylvania, where the Biden Center is located. It is worth noting that classified documents were discovered at the center last year.

On Monday, Biden released a video statement in honor of National Police Week and Peace Officers Memorial Day. He stated that he does not support defunding law enforcement, which goes against the stance of some members of his own political party who rallied for it in 2020.
In his message that lasted for 2 minutes and 52 seconds, he proceeded to highlight the achievements of his administration in terms of gun control. He emphasized the need for clarity on the matter.
Biden stated that the solution is not to withdraw funding from the police.
The purpose is to equip you with the necessary tools and education to become allies and defenders of communities that require assistance. Biden praised himself for enacting the American Rescue Plan amidst the pandemic, which allocated $350 billion to states and cities for the purpose of retaining and recruiting more law enforcement officers, compensating for overtime and bonuses, enhancing benefits for disabled first responders, and ensuring community safety. The president reported that numerous communities have already utilized over $10 billion of these funds.
Biden then proceeded to talk about gun regulation, framing it as a means of enhancing the protection of law enforcement officials.
